Nice article, David. For some reason, this is one of the least understood principles in the HVAC industry. Long run times are good. Short cycling is bad. It's pretty simple.

Manual J load calculations are required by code, but almost no one in the industry does them. And when they do, they're often not correct. They overestimate the temperature differences and underestimate the building envelope. I just wrote about this last week, and you can read it here: http://hub.am/9Dphag.

Keep up the good work, David. It's going to take a lot of us constantly getting the word out about this to bring about major change.

This is a very good point and a very good metaphor. I remember I used to think insulation was the key. There is definitely more to energy auditing. I really enjoyed the BPI training course I took. So glad I did it. I love my job!

Peter,
I think that the big companies will likely focus on the silver star side of the Home Star program which is the basic prescriptive requirements such as weather stripping and such that can be done without a lot of consultation with the homeowner. I think that the bigger companies will find it hard to spend the quality time and quoting time necessary to do a quality job on the Gold Star level since each home is different and will require a different analysis of work.

Plus, I think that some of the big contractors might even outsource the auditing work just to get the follow on contracting work. Also, I think that the bigger companies will market enough to raise overall consumer awareness which will help the whole industry.

Peter / All - I don't know about Illinois, but it doesn't appear that Missouri participated in the Retrofit Rampup program. Nobody I've asked has heard of it. - David

David--thanks for another thoughtful post.

I'm in complete agreement on the potential for PACE and HomeStar to ignite the market. (Side question, but did MO or IL apply for the Retrofit Rampup program?)

And I also agree that by unlocking the funding issues, the goldrush of big firms and inexpensive "drive by" audits will be ignited.

All the more reason for our community to continue to pound away at building understanding for the Whole House approach to auditing. I'm reminded constantly of how misunderstood this concept is amongst the general populace. If we can get people to understand that there isn't a more valuable $300 to 500 you could spend on your house, and that experience, training and certification is critical to addressing the complex ecosystem that is a typical home, then independents such as yourself will thrive. Big companies that try to scale quickly (and will have to hire rapidly) will be hard pressed to maintain high quality and the level of individual customer attention homeowners want.
